Meta-Smallville Twist:
Fixing the Worst
Byline
-- Webmaster,
Our Universe, December 24, 2006 (with subsequent edits)
The
Meta-Smallville premise is such that it provides the opportunity to
specifically alter or fix the "worst," say, 5% of the
series. Lois just fudged on that 5%, as part of her overall effort
to make the book seem more incredible, and the Clark=Superman
speculation more implausible. Private dialogue, for example
between Clark and Lois after the press conference when she launches her
book, would have the effect
of confirming for the viewers the specific elements of Lois's book that
were departures from what Lois actually experienced or knows to have
happened.
Point
#8 on the Meta-Smallville Synopsis page mentioned this aspect of the
twist, and an interesting possibility involving reversing Jonathan Kent's death. Copying and
adapting from a recent
description I posted to Usenet that elaborated on this in point #2 below...
So
consider the exploding baby thing that happened in 4-20
"Ageless" I think it was. That never quite happened that
way.
It might have been Lois's birthday and she got a bit drunk, went
home and just made up that silly part of Chapter 86 with the baby
exploding. Problem solved! Get the idea? So here's my
top 3
changes that will get mentioned in Clark-Lois or other dialogue,
towards the end of the 43-page script for the Smallville finale...
#3 -- The aforementioned exploding baby, just as an inside joke
that gets a laugh.
#2 -- Jonathan Kent's pointless death. So pointless that we just
reverse it. After Clark told Lana his secret in
"Reckoning", both
Lana and Pa Kent died and both got reversed with the time crystal.
But Lois chose to write it that Pa Kent dies, to give her book a
tragic respite from any sense of unrelenting parody. It also makes
for a great finale revelation for viewers when the camera pans over
to Pa Kent sitting at the table on the podium at the press conference.
Asked "Mr. Kent, did you go along with your daughter-in-law[-to-be]
killing you off in her book?" Answer: "Sure did. If I'd
found out my
son was a flying alien from Krypton I'd have died of a heart attack long
before then! Lois: "Ah, but he had the time
crystal!" Pa: "He'd have
needed a hundred of those things 'cause I'd have kept having another
heart attack. It woulda been Groundhog Day for me at the Smallville
Medical Center!"
#1 -- Clark willingly shooting up on Red K and robbing banks at the
end of season 2. Didn't quite happen that way, but Lois
figured it
was a good opportunity to plant a false seed of Clark=Superman doubt
early on. :-)
So we've got the Chloe/Lois issue covered, plus the exploding baby, pointless Death of Pa Kent, and Clark willingly shooting up on Red K
and robbing banks at the end of season 2. There may be room for a couple more at least, in that 5% or so that Lois fudged on or wrote
when she was drunk. Email us at the link below with your specific
wish list. If we get enough really good ones maybe
we'll stretch it to changing 10% (but no higher! :-))
