Welcome to META.SMALLVILLE-TWIST.ORG
Byline
-- Webmaster,
Our Universe, December 24, 2006 (with subsequent edits)
On
November 20, "Khyla" posted a very brief fanfic on the Kryptonsite Message
Boards, based on a mind-blowing premise. Yours
truly read about
it the following week in a post in the speculation section, and it was a
'Eureka!" moment. One amendment and lots of verbiage from
your webmaster later, this web was born as a kind of quasi-official site
that Khyla gave her blessing to.
To
mix in many titles that we considered, think of this web's sub-heading or
description as "Meta-Lois: The Smallville Fix and Ultimate
Ending Twist". For those among us of the short acronym
persuasion, we're suggesting MST, for Meta-Smallville Twist or, if you
prefer, Meta-Smallville Theory.

What's
The Meta-Smallville Twist? |
A
more lengthy, 10-point description is on our Meta-Smallville
Twist Synopsis
page, but here's a brief summary...
Think
of the last hour of Smallville being set 5-to-7 years in the future
and revealing the events we've seen are based on Lois Lane's book
"Smallville". In that future, Lois is either married
or engaged to Clark
Kent, and knows he's Superman. Her motivation in writing the
book
is to help protect Clark's secret. Her technique is to mock or
parody
the idea of Clark=Superman, with what's mostly the whole, incredible
TRUTH, but with a major twist and a few changes. The major twist
is
that she splits her own persona into two characters for purposes of
her book only, hence the existence of Chloe and all the contrivances
of her character, versus the character named Lois who arrives later.
The other "few changes" are the subject
of this page.
This ending
is NOT like Bobby waking up in the shower, or St. Elsewhere being
the dream of an autistic boy. In fact almost the exact opposite,
in
that as much as 95%-99% of the EVENTS in Lois's book are the
whole truth. In this Smallville version of the story, virtually
all of her
experiences and journalistic aptitude were "Chloe
Sullivan's", while
her name and family tree (sister Lucy, father General Lane) were
with the character named Lois. But the ending does give us a
great
opportunity to take, say, the
worst 5% of Smallville and fix it.
Lois
just fudged on that 5%, as part of her overall effort to make the book
seem more incredible, and the Clark=Superman speculation more
implausible.
Again,
that's the brief summary and it doesn't fully convey the power and
creative potential of this ending.

Why
Would They Implement This? |
They
should implement it as an optional interpretation, because it's a great
way to frame a series that will otherwise remain seriously flawed.
But
whether or not current Powers That Be, or any particular future ones implement
it isn't really relevant. Whatever direction the series takes the rest of the way doesn't alter the
Meta-Smallville Twist (see also that 'What
if The Powers That Be Did This...?"
section). The 5 1/2 seasons we've seen so far allow for at least
80% of the series to be a truthful telling of the Smallville story by
Lois, even if the next season and a half were to turn completely
ridiculous. The latter would just become Lois
letting loose and departing from the truth more in the last 20% of her book.
What
we advocate and predict is that the Meta-Smallville Twist is and will be the best interpretation of this
Smallville series, and it will eventually be implemented as a full
production version. It's just a question of when. It might be a
generation from now, with different actors doing the last hour of
Smallville as a prelude to a new series or movie. It would be nice if
these Powers That Be saw the merit now though, again as an optional
interpretation or framing of the series.
In
the meantime, you might find the series more enjoyable the rest of the way
by keeping this context in mind. What you're seeing is based on a book
titled 'Smallville" that Lois Lane writes in 5-to-7 years.
It's ironically almost entirely an accurate recounting of the events
that she experienced. But the more incredible events, and the splitting
of her character into two, and a few other changes collectively serve
her purpose, which is to protect Clark's secret by mocking or parodying the idea that
Clark=Superman. She holds that press conference in 5-to-7
years, to launch this book.
You'll
also find that many moments we've already seen in the series tie in very
well with that future. So keeping this twist in mind can enhance
repeat viewing of the series. In fact it makes it much more
interesting even in some of its worst parts, because it may well be that
Lois fudged those to intentionally suit her objective.

What's
Next? |
Nothing
is imminent. It's possible there may be a full 43-page script
posted to illustrate how great the finale could be under this premise,
but various descriptive material on the site already touches on or gives several
examples. We may also be posting about the new theory in a few
places around the net, while waiting for the series to run its course.
Email feedback is welcome at the webmaster link
below, and thanks for reading!
